How to plan a Whatnot stream

The difference between a show that clears the rail and one that drags is mostly decided before you go live: what you bring, what order it runs in, and where the bidding starts. Here's a simple way to plan a clothing stream.

Key takeaways

  • —Sort your stock into three groups: filler, heroes and clearance.
  • —Run filler first while the room fills, heroes in the middle, clearance at the end.
  • —Start prices are opening bids. Set them low enough to get bidding going, but never below what you'd accept.
  • —Load every listing before you go live, with the right category, condition and shipping band.

Pick the stock

Bring more than you think you'll sell. Mix pieces that are quick, cheap wins with a handful of items people will stay for. Stock that's been sitting on Vinted or in a tub for weeks is ideal for a live audience.

Sort it into three groups

  • Filler: solid, everyday pieces at modest prices. Keeps the room ticking over and builds momentum.
  • Heroes: your best pieces, where the expected price is higher and the margin is healthy. These are what people stay for.
  • Clearance: stock that's sat for 60 days or more, or won't clear much over what you paid. Get your money back and free up space.

Set the run order

Open with filler while viewers arrive; nobody wants your best piece sold to six people. Bring the heroes in once the room has built up. Finish with clearance, when the remaining viewers are bargain hunters.

Mention what's coming. 'North Face puffer in about ten minutes' keeps people watching through the filler.

Set start prices

A Whatnot start price is the opening bid. Start too high and nobody bids; too low on a hero and you risk selling it cheap to a quiet room. For a hero, a safe rule is to start at the lowest price you'd be happy to sell it for.

Whatnot's commission and processing come off the final price. Check what you'd actually keep with the Whatnot fee calculator.

Load the listings before you go live

Adding listings mid-show kills the pace. Load the whole run in advance with a bulk-upload CSV, each row with its category, condition and UK shipping band. For a rail you'll describe on camera, numbered listings ('Medium #1' to '#30') are quicker than naming every piece.

Doing it in ResellIQ

ResellIQ's stream planner does this from your stock. Tap items in, and it tags each one filler, hero or clearance from its expected price, margin and age, sets the run order in one tap, and exports the whole show as a Whatnot UK CSV. You can add numbered slots after your named lots and reorder anything by hand.

Frequently asked

What order should I sell items in on Whatnot?
A common structure is filler first while the room fills, your best pieces in the middle when viewers peak, and clearance stock at the end.
How much should I start Whatnot auctions at?
Low enough to get bids going. Most clothing sellers start below the price they'd ask on Vinted, with firmer starts only on standout pieces.
How many items should I bring to a Whatnot stream?
More than you expect to sell. A full run of filler, heroes and clearance keeps the show moving even if some pieces don't get a bid.
